does not inspire confidence @ 12:40 am

Does anyone else find this non-humorous clip of Lorne Michaels giving Jimmy Fallon a pep talk about Late Night awkward? Just looking at the apprehensive expression on Jimmy Fallon’s face makes me feel nauseous. Too much information.

(Possibly related: my vicarious stage fright. When I went to see Jessie and Patrick act in plays at Brown I always had trouble looking at them directly for the first 10 minutes or so because I was afraid of seeing them flub a line.)

penny wise @ 1:44 pm

I very much enjoyed Stephen Colbert’s interview with Jeff Gore, MIT physics postdoctoral fellow and founder of Citizens for Retiring the Penny (and possibly the only official member).

Speaking as a former cashier and a slim wallet connoisseur, the penny has got to go. I wouldn’t miss the nickel either.

Does Stephen Colbert’s run for president violate election law?:

Yes. The Federal Election Commission prohibits corporations from making “any contribution or expenditure in connection with a federal election.” A “contribution” includes “anything of value,” including airtime. Thus each time Colbert promotes his candidacy on The Colbert Report, he’ll be accepting an illegal “in kind” contribution from Comedy Central’s parent company, Viacom. The FEC does exempt news programs (including satires like the Report) from the “in kind” airtime ban, but not if a political party, political committee, or candidate (like Colbert) controls the show’s content.

Surely this was anticipated by Comedy Central/Viacom’s legal team before it went through? I wonder.

old year for now @ 7:30 pm

Still under the weather and still fine with it for now. Still spending most of my days in the living listening to C-SPAN or NPR and alternating between napping and knitting. I have also spent many relaxing hours lying on a bed at Brittney’s house marathon watching season 3 of “One Tree Hill” which is really just awful but that’s what lowgrade fevers and extended winter breaks are for right?

We are going to England in a week I can’t really believe it. I have collected lots of addresses to send postcards too. This way I will not end up sending a postcard to Katie every single day that didn’t say much because I had no one else to write too. Mummy has planned lots of activities and I have 3 books in hand and another one that I want to pick up, and more yarn and ideas for knitting, and I should really apply for some internships. I think I’ll be fine. Even if I still have my cold then, I managed to do two games of laser tag and drive Maurie’s family’s minivan the other night without mishap, I just had to rest up some more the next day.

online photo editing @ 1:21 pm

If you have a Flickr account, Preloadr is a really useful tool for editing your uploaded photos. The autocontrast filter is the only option that I have used, but it’s worked like a charm for photos I took with Mummy’s camera that didn’t go through post-processing on my computer with F-Spot.

When you are bored and have no particular obligations or plans, Smallville DVDs are really, really addictive. Too bad I have run out of fresh episodes until at least Tuesday.

pup date @ 9:19 am

It’s been brought to my attention that I haven’t been writing about my life enough. So here goes.

I finished my Philosophy of Law class on Friday. I’ve been enjoying checking out the music suggested in this recent AskMe thread on contemporary music with a “mid-80s synthpop vibe.” I’ve been spending a lot of time with Maurie and her family. I saw Maya last Friday before she was whisked off to El Salvador and then California for almost the rest of the summer. I finished (almost) all 1168 pages of Atlas Shrugged, selectively skipping huge portions of John Galt’s excessive monologue. (By the way, here’s an update on the Atlas Shrugged movie which is apparently in the works.) Been watching lots of Smallville to pass the time.

Now that class is over? Back to cleaning, spending more quality time with the cats, maybe some biking if I can take the heat. I’d like to finish scanning the rest of twelth grade for the yearbook project even though it means admitting that I still need Windows occasionally. It would also be nice to actually take some new photos once in awhile. Haven’t been very inspired, Washington in the summer is not pretty. But perhaps Quebec will be.

Our washing machine has been broken for awhile which means I haven’t done laundry in almost a month. In this weather, that’s gross, even for me. I’ve been washing my underwear in the sink but I can’t be bothered to do that with all my clothes.

Now, off to make something of my day!
